Our Children Need To Be Left A Legacy

I was driving with my daughter Sarah in her car the other day and was trying to give her a few words of wisdom about school, work, and being a careful driver. After I got through with my monologue there was dead silence and I thought well, at least I told her my concerns. If it fell on deaf ears so be it. She probably has her mind on other things. After about one minute of silence she said to me, “Dad I really don’t know what I am ever going to do without you.” To me that was her way of telling me that she understood what I was saying to her, and that maybe she actually depended on my ever-present advice.

Encouraging Responsiblity

BE PROACTIVE NOT REACTIVE
Understanding your own values and expectations is critical if students are going to learn responsible behavior. Too often teachers react to students who fail to follow procedures, and the student may not even be aware of what the procedures are. Proactively teach students the behaviors you expect in your classroom.

AWARENESS
Try to get students to focus their attention on their own behavior and how it affects others. Never, Never, ask why did you do that? Always ask, what did you do? Too often when a student is asked why they did something it gives them an opportunity to alibi their actions and use circumstances or another person as a reason for their irresponsibility. Asking what rather than why forces the student to focus on his own actions.

Character Is Everything: What Is Diligence?

A journalist asked Thomas Edison, “What do you think is the first requirement]for success?” “The ability to apply your physical and mental energies to one problem incessantly,” replied the inventor, “without growing weary.” Diligence is more than being busy. It is a quality of dedication. According to Edison, Diligence is applying “physical and mental energies” to the problem at hand “without growing weary” - that is, without losing interest before the task is done. A person who exhibits the character quality of diligence knows how to invest all of their energies into a task that is assigned to him or her and doesn’t allow difficult circumstances to interfere with their progress, and certainly knows how to keep their eye on the prize and press forward to the finish line.
