Brittany I feel you. I’m doing a research paper and this is really gunna boost my audiences attention.

  3. Kaitlyn says:

i have to do a documented essay on an opinion i feel is a problem, or is important to me. so i chose bullying. it is becoming an even bigger problem than it has ever been so these facts and statistics will help me a bunch. and i agree with you Brittany.

  4. Tracy-Ann L says:

This is so scary when you think that you send your children to school thinking they will be safe, only to find out they are in more danger than before :( This will definitely help me in my English paper.

  5. Dedra-K says:

I agree with all three of you. This is scary, I too chose this as a research project for my college essay, but I did so becasue it striks very close to home. My son has been being bullied at school for some time. He just turned 11 on the 8th of Dec, but a few months ago tried to commit suicide becuase of it. I had tried to get the school to do something about what was going on and they kept saying I was over reacting. This stuff is way more serious than ppl think it is.

  6. Tracy-Ann L says:

So Dedra what did you do? Because this is the problem I am having with this system, where do they draw the line between teasing and bullying? aren’t they the same thing? Too many of our children are being put in body bags because the school keeps telling parents that “they are over reacting, and that is normal behavior for kids that age” I am just sick of it!!!!

  7. Dedra-K says:

I believe that teasing and bullying are the same thing. I am still fighting at my son’s school. They are still refusing to see much of what is going on as bullying. About a week ago my son got suspended because he got so upset becasue the teachers kept telling him to ignore the other kids, that he shoved one boy and hit another. So the ones that did the bullying got away with it and he got into trouble. I have seen it with my own eyes on the playground at school, a child being pushed around by a bunch of bigger kids, and when he went for help from the teachers, they told him to ignore it. When I called the superintendent about it he got upset at me for even implying they were not doing anything about bullying. I am at a loss at what to do, not even the law enforcement in our town will do anything. I work with my son at home on what to do if someone is bullying him, and if the teachers won’t listen to call me, he has a cell phone for emergencies. I am trying to bring more awareness to the community as well.

  8. Tracy-Ann L says:

I just finished reading so many websites and articles on how to help, address, and handle this matter. It is for my college English class and it bothers me what I found out. It is not taken seriously unfortunately, until a child dies, and even then it may just be looked at as teasing and kids being kids. My advise to you, do whatever you can to protect your child because it may result in you burying him. When researching for my paper, i found so many of these stories so emotional that I could not help being tearful. Our law makers needs to be pro active, and not wait for body bags to be filled with dead children for being bullied. Here in Massachusetts they passed a law called Phoebe’s Law because of the same bullying. The schools and parents alike needs to get involved or we are going to be in serious trouble. I wish you the best for you and your son. I know it must be painful as a parent to stand by and watch your child being bullied knowing that you have limited power to stop. it. Be strong and don’t give up, help will come. I just hope it is sooner than later.

  9. Dedra-K says:

Thank you for your kind words I too hope it is sooner than later. It is hard to do this paper, because it is so close to home, but I am learning some things too.

  10. Dee says:

Wow! Reading these statistics are staggering! I was researching the topic because I am a motivational speaker at high schools. A few weeks ago I watched a story on the news that made me I’ll. A lovely, 10 year old girl hung herself because she was continuously bullied at school. She even told her mom about it and asked if she could be home-schooled because of it. Like most parents, the mom gave her survival skills to the best of her knowledge, unaware of the severity of the situation. I was devastated to learn that someone so young could make such a choice; and equally devastated that what was happening in her life went unnoticed. I am compelled to address this issue in schools because of it.

I am writing a psychology paper on conformity and bullying. However, since it is academic research I cannot just use any statistics I find. I really need to know where they come from, but no website ever provides any reliable sources. Most of them quote Dan Olweus in a source from 1984 as if it is still recent. I really need to know this..

I am going to my 14 year old daughters school today, for a meeting with the Superintendent of the school district. She has been bullied for two 1/2 years, and the teachers & principal(s) have considered it “over reacting” on her part. Last week, she contemplated suicide & is currently medicated and seeing a doctor. Thank God for the Angel on her shoulder that night, and the fact that she & I have a very strong relationship. These statistics are NOT WRONG, for all of the nay sayers. Braden Rudd, you need to check your facts.

  29. brianna says:

  30. Cathy says:

Wow what I have read so far really makes me feel better. I have a daughter in 3rd grade who is being bullied and has been for at least 2 years now by 2 different girls. I just got back from school where I spoke with the principal (this is not the first time) and also my childs teacher. The teacher and principal claim that my daughter is over sensitive. I feel so powerless because I know that she feels they don’t believe her. She might feel powerless but I now know there are things I can do to help her and hopefully maybe even educate some of the people at her school also.

  31. Seijah says:

This is sad. I cannot believe what I just read, its crazy! But this makes me realize that bullying can’t really be stopped because its an ongoing situation that occurs more than once. I wish I could do something, but I don’t really know what more I can do…..

  32. Retired Military says:

It breaks my heart to hear so many children dealibg with this problem. I too have a child who is in high school dealing with bullying. Unfortunately for her it started in elementary school with another mother. I didn’t realize it but she had been taunting my child and encouraging the other children to do the same. I was recently informed of this by many children who witnessed this first hand. My daughter is at the point of wanting to home school and I have considered it for her own sanity. It is a school problem but also a parenting problem. I’m at a loss and don’t know how to handle it. Telling your child these kids are immature and talking to the school is getting me no where with this. Something has to be done! I’d kick the ladies **** but what am I teaching my child and where would that get me!!

    Folks,
I just finished reading a book by Frank Peretti called, “The Wounded Spirit.” It tells his own story of being horribly bullied as a child, how he survived thrum the loving support of his parents and others, and what he wants us all to understand about this subject and what it will take to fight it. You can learn more about the book at woundedspirit.com. God bless and help us all.

  38. Denna says:

I found this article because I was doing the same as many of you preparing for a college class. And like wise my issues with Bullying is my 13 yr son was physically bullied all year last year. Every time we would approach the principal for a resolution he could turn to my son and ask him what is part was. These same group of kids verbally attacked him in a public park. in the presents of his 4-h club. there was no provoking by him. Not once did any of these kids receive any disciplinary actions. I have since began to home-school my son as well as his 2 younger sisters. While There may be some success with bully programs, where I live falls in the statistics of happens more than the teacher tend to. thanks for all the great info and insight it will make for a great persuasive speech.

  47. Rick says:

I am the Father of my 7th grade daughter that is currently under seige. We just got home from Children’s Hospital because my daughter had to be taken by ambulance due to a significant change in her mental state. She passed out, then was very dizzy and then she would not speak or move. Pupils were dialated and pulse was uneven (per the EMT). This is the 2nd time at Children’s Hospital. The first time was because my daughter wanted to KILL HERSELF. This is a very REAL ISSUE. Please take the time to be a part of your childs life. Also, make sure to press the schools to confront this in a proactive way. Do not let the principal tell you that your child needs to deal with it and have coping mechanisms. The bullies need to be stopped. Teachers/Parents need to step up – NOW
